Most of you are familiar with St. Pauli Girl, the deliciously refreshing lager from Bremen, Germany. More temperate palates may be familiar with Viva con Agua de Sankt Pauli, a non-profit based in St. Pauli/Hamburg, Germany campaigning for clean drinking water worldwide. Water is life, and an unassailable right, which is why Viva con Agua is committed to providing everyone with access to clean drinking water.
FC St. Pauli NYC, the New York City supporters club for the German side recently relegated to Bundesliga 2, have banned together with other soccer supporters – including the Borough Boys, HSV Fan Club NYC, and Woodside Celtic Supporters Club NYC – to create an action-packed weekend to raise awareness of and funds for Viva con Agua.
Things kick off on Friday, Nov. 11, 2011 when FC St. Pauli NYC – also known as the East River Pirates – will host a Rummelpottlaufen (Trick or Treat) German pub crawl. Participants are encouraged to dress up (a pirate outfit is always a good option) and meet at the East River Bar in Brooklyn at 7:30 PM. From there, the revellers will make their way to other German bars and restaurants in Brooklyn and Manhattan. Swashbuckling and schnitzel – always a good combination!
On Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011, the Viva con Agua Charity Cup 2011 will be held at 1:00 PM at Sunnyside Gardens Park in Queens, New York. Those interested in fielding a team or joining a side should contact Captain Henning. The rest can come and watch.
Finally, on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011, FC St. Pauli NYC host a charity auction to raise funds for Viva con Agua. They’ve got some amazing items on the auction block, including a trip to Germany. Plus, there will be a viewing party to watch the FC St. Pauli vs. Hansa Rostock match, as well as tunes by Rabbi Darkside (not to be confused with Mephistopheles Mohel). Festivities begin at 7:00 PM at the East River Bar in Brooklyn.
Even if you can’t make it to any of these events, you still can support the cause. Visit the Viva con Agua site and click on the “Donate Online” button on the right.
